After three months of beta testing, Apple is finally launching iOS 17 for the iPhone XS and newer models. Set to release on Monday, September 18, at around 10 a.m. Pacific Time, the update will bring several exciting features aimed to enhance user experience. Here are the top 10 features you should keep an eye out for.
1. StandBy: A Customizable Interface
The new full-screen StandBy view turns your charging iPhone into a versatile display offering quick glances at a variety of information. Perfect for a nightstand or kitchen counter, StandBy can display the time, calendar events, weather, music controls, and much more. It’s especially powerful with the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display.
2. Contact Posters: Personalize Your Calls
This feature lets you create a personalized poster that appears when you call someone. You can customize it with a photo or a Memoji, and even change the font and background colors. This brings a personal touch to the Phone app, and will also extend to third-party calling apps.
3. NameDrop: Simplify Contact Sharing
Gone are the days of manually sharing contact details. With NameDrop, just bring your iPhones close together to share selected phone numbers or email addresses. You can also share your personalized Contact Posters.
4. Live Voicemail: Real-time Transcription
No more guessing what a voicemail is about. Live Voicemail transcribes the message on the screen in real-time. If it’s an important call, you can pick it up while the caller is still leaving a message.
5. Swipe to Reply in iMessage
Replying to messages has never been easier. Simply swipe right on any message in iMessage to send an inline reply. This feature streamlines messaging and keeps conversations organized.
6. Interactive Widgets: Do More with Widgets
Widgets on iOS 17 are now interactive. You can mark reminders as completed, control your smart home devices, play or pause music, and much more directly from your Home Screen, Lock Screen, or the new StandBy view.
7. Improved Autocorrect: Type More Accurately
Apple has improved the autocorrect feature with a state-of-the-art language model for word prediction. This allows for more accurate corrections and predictive text recommendations that appear inline as you type.
8. Offline Maps: Navigate Without Data
Apple Maps now offers offline map downloads, catching up to Google Maps. You can download specific map areas and still access turn-by-turn navigation, estimated arrival times, and place finding without an internet connection.
9. Stickers Drawer: All Your Stickers in One Place
iOS 17 introduces a new stickers drawer that consolidates all types of stickers, including Live Stickers, emoji, Memoji, and iMessage sticker packs, making it easier to find and use them.
10. Simplified “Siri” Command
Apple has simplified the voice command for Siri. You can now just say “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri” to activate the voice assistant. What’s more, you can issue multiple commands in a row without having to repeat the wake phrase.
These features are just the tip of the iceberg, with more enhancements coming later this year. To install iOS 17, navigate to the Settings app under General → Software Update.
