In a move that promises to revolutionize how we interact with written content online, Microsoft is testing a new feature called “AI-writing” for its Edge browser. Powered by ChatGPT’s GPT-4 and Bing AI, this feature is designed to simplify, enhance, and personalize your writing experience on the web.

How Does it Work?

The feature allows users to select text on any web page and request Microsoft Edge to rewrite it in their desired tone, length, and format. It works similarly to the existing Compose Box but offers a more seamless integration directly into the web browsing experience. For instance, you can easily generate ideas, elaborate text, change the tone, or reformat the text all within the browser.

In the browser settings, once “AI-writing” is activated, you can select text in any text box and click “Rewrite.” Edge will then produce an alternative version of the text. The “Tones” feature offers multiple options, such as “Professional,” “Casual,” “Enthusiastic,” “Informational,” and “Funny.” Depending on your preference, Edge will adapt the content to match the chosen tone. You can also switch between various formats like “Paragraph,” “Email,” “Blog post,” or “Ideas,” and control the length of the text with options like “Short,” “Medium,” or “Long.”

Targeted User Testing

Currently, Microsoft is A/B testing the feature with a limited user base and has made it available in the Canary version of Chromium Edge. The company has clarified that this feature is still in its preview phase.
