Apple has unveiled the 2nd generation of its popular wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro. This updated model brings some meaningful improvements in audio quality, connectivity and convenience.
Upgraded to USB-C Charging
A long anticipated change is the shift to USB-C charging instead of Lightning. This allows the AirPods Pro 2 case to be charged with the same cable as recent iPhones, iPads and Macs for added flexibility.
Apple’s press release notes you can even charge the AirPods Pro 2 directly from compatible iPhone 15 models, which also feature USB-C ports.
Enhanced Dust Resistance
Apple says the new AirPods Pro have an improved IP54 rating, up from IPX4 in the original. This adds protection against dust ingress to the existing sweat and water resistance.
So users shouldn’t have to worry as much when bringing their AirPods to the beach, hiking trails or other adventures.
Unlocks Lossless Audio with Headset
In a first for any wireless headset, Apple states the new AirPods Pro will support lossless audio playback when used with their upcoming Apple Vision mixed reality headset.
By combining the H2 chip in the AirPods with special wireless protocols in the Vision headset, Apple will deliver full 20-bit 48kHz lossless playback with “ultra low latency.”
This promises a major leap in wireless audio fidelity for immersive entertainment, gaming and communication in the Vision ecosystem when it launches next year.
Adaptive Audio and Other Software Updates
The onboard H2 chip also enables new listening features that Apple will roll out in iOS 17. These include:
- Adaptive Audio that dynamically tunes noise cancellation levels based on your environment.
- Conversation Boost to amplify voices and reduce background noise during talks.
- Personalized spatial audio tailored to your ear shape.
Together these software updates allow the AirPods Pro 2 to deliver a more customized and intelligent audio experience.
More Environmentally Friendly
Apple emphasized the AirPods Pro 2 have been designed to lower their carbon footprint. This includes the use of recycled rare earth metals and gold.
Apple has committed to being 100% carbon neutral by 2030 across its entire business. The company noted the AirPods Pro 2 represent progress towards that climate goal.
Priced at $249, the revamped AirPods Pro can be pre-ordered starting September 9, and will hit store shelves on September 23. With meaningful improvements that enhance convenience, durability and audio quality, the AirPods Pro 2 look to build on the popularity of the original.
