Microsoft Windows archive formats

At Build 2023 conference, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will be getting native support for popular archive file formats such as 7-Zip, RAR and more.

Today, Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23493 to the Dev Channel. This new Insider build adds native support for reading additional archive file formats using the libarchive open-source project such as

  • .tar
  • .tar.gz
  • .tar.bz2
  • .tar.zst
  • .tar.xz
  • .tgz
  • .tbz2
  • .tzst
  • .txz
  • .rar
  • .7z

Since this is a preview release, there are some performance issues. Copying files out of large archives or using “Extract All” might be slower than expected for “solid” .7Z or .rar archives. Microsoft will fix this issue in the upcoming Insider builds.
