DeepMind and the Brain team from Google Research will be joining forces as a single unit called Google DeepMind

Google Deepmind

In order to better compete with OpenAI and other several other leading AI startups, Alphabet today announced that it is bringing together two world-class research teams: the Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind. According to Alphabet chief Sundar Pichai, this new combined AI team will be able to build more capable systems safely and responsibly, backed by the computational resources of Google.

The Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind have done some incredible work over the past decade including the following:

AlphaGo, Transformers, word2vec, WaveNet, AlphaFold, sequence to sequence models, distillation, deep reinforcement learning, and distributed systems and software frameworks like TensorFlow and JAX for expressing, training and deploying large scale ML models.

Demis Hassabis, DeepMind’s chief will become the CEO of Google DeepMind. And Jeff Dean. Google Brain team’s chief will become Google’s Chief Scientist of Google Research and Google DeepMind. At first, these two executives will be focused on developing a series of powerful, multimodal AI models.

“By creating Google DeepMind, I believe we can get to that future faster. Building ever more capable and general AI, safely and responsibly, demands that we solve some of the hardest scientific and engineering challenges of our time. For that, we need to work with greater speed, stronger collaboration and execution, and to simplify the way we make decisions to focus on achieving the biggest impact,” wrote DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.
