Last November, Qualcomm unveiled Oryon CPU, built on the technologies acquired from Nuvia. Qualcomm claimed that the new Oryon custom CPU can deliver a new level of performance and efficiency. And it will be integrated across a wide portfolio of Snapdragon powered products starting with PCs and then smartphones.

Windows PCs powered by Qualcomm Oryon CPU are expected to be available starting in late 2023, with wider availability in the first half of 2024.

According to a new report from Chinese website, Dell, a leading Windows OEM, has created an entirely new division to focus on developing PCs based on Qualcomm Oryon CPUs. Dell has plans to release laptops based on Qualcomm Oryon CPUs in 2024. In general, OEMs will task their existing PC division to develop devices based on new processors. But Dell has taken a different approach by creating a new division with people involving hardware, software and firmware to create a new set of products targeting 2024.

According to rumors, Qualcomm Oryon CPU-based Snapdragon chipsets will be able to match or outperform Apple’s M2 chipsets in both performance and efficiency.

Microsoft is also preparing for the launch of Qualcomm Oryon-based devices. Late last year, Microsoft released the Windows Dev Kit 2023 device powered by the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 compute platform. Developers can use it to build, test and debug Arm-native apps. It also comes with 32GB RAM and 512GB storage. Microsoft also announced the general availability of the following:

  • .NET Framework 4.8.1 with the Windows 11 2022 Update so the large ecosystem of .NET Framework apps can also run natively on Arm64.
  • Cloud services (Azure VMs)
  • Arm64EC

Microsoft and Qualcomm are working together with leading app developers including Adobe to port their apps to Windows on ARM platform.
