Microsoft has announced a new feature for their popular Edge browser that allows users to securely save files from the Edge mobile app to OneDrive on mobile devices. With the increasing need for secure data management, especially in enterprises, this new feature is an excellent addition to the existing security measures offered by the browser.

Previously, users had to download and save files locally on their mobile devices, which posed a risk to enterprise data. This new feature allows users to download and save files securely to OneDrive, enabling them to access and share them later while maintaining enterprise security parameters.

This feature is especially beneficial to enterprise customers who have high bars for security and have been blocking users from saving files to local device storage. The ability to save files to OneDrive provides a simple solution that allows users to easily save, access, and share files from the Edge mobile app while respecting the enterprise’s security measures.

The new method of saving files from Edge to OneDrive joins other data security measures, including the Edge mobile app’s coverage under Intune’s App Protection Policy (APP) and its limited sharing of browser data only to other protected Microsoft 365 apps, such as Outlook and OneDrive.

To use this new feature, users need to log in to the Edge mobile app with their Azure AD accounts, and Intune admins need to assign Intune App Protection Policy (APP) to users. If “Save copies of org data” is set to Block, OneDrive needs to be allowed.

While this feature is an excellent addition to Edge’s security measures, there are still some areas for improvement. For instance, the ability to view and watch content directly in the Microsoft Edge, eliminating the need to download files. This feature could be particularly useful for users visiting SharePoint or OneDrive for Business who don’t want to download anything but view the content in the format of PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or OneNote.

Having said that, the feature provides users with a simple solution to save, access, and share files while maintaining enterprise security parameters. It is a great improvement that enterprise customers will appreciate.
