Back in 2016, Microsoft originally announced Windows Information Protection (WIP), formerly referred to as enterprise data protection (EDP). Windows Information Protection worked with the Office 365 ProPlus and Azure Rights Management to help protect business data when it leaves the device or when its shared with others. WIP can identify personal and business information, determine which apps have access to it, and provide the basic controls necessary to determine what users are able to do with business data.
Over the past few years, Microsoft has developed security solutions such as Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and Microsoft Purview Information Protection that offer multi-cloud and multi-platform data protection. So, Microsoft has now decided to discontinue Windows Information Protection (WIP). Windows Information Protection is no longer under active feature development and will be removed in future versions of Windows.
Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP), which is deeply integrated with Microsoft Purview Information Protection to help your organization discover, classify, and protect sensitive information as it is used or shared.
If you have Microsoft 365 Enterprise E3 subscription or greater, you can now try Microsoft Purview Information Protection and DLP free trial of Microsoft Purview from the Microsoft Purview compliance portal.
