Microsoft today reminded Windows 8.1 users that the OS will reach end of support on January 10, 2023. After this date, Microsoft will no longer offer technical assistance and software updates for devices running Windows 8.1.
To avoid these issues, Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest, in-service, Windows release like Windows 10 or Windows 11. If your device can’t run the latest releases of Windows, Microsoft recommends users to replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.
Microsoft also highlighted that it will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1.
While you could continue to use a PC running Windows 8.1, without continued software and security updates, your PC will be at greater risk for viruses and malware.
Also, Microsoft does not offer free upgrades from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
